I was lucky enough to score an ARC of Jake Burt's newest title, The Right Hook of Devin Velma, as part of my involvement with an amazing book sharing group #booksquad. It is set to drop Sept. 4, 2018.
Jake Burt's second book is quite different from his first title, Greetings from Witness Protection, but I enjoyed it just the same. The two main characters are as different as night and day, but their interactions quite a funny and heartwarming tale of how far you will go for your friends and family.

Clayton Byrd Goes Undercover
Clayton loves three things in life: his harmonica, playing the blues and his grandpa, Cool Papa Byrd. Lucky for Clayton, those three things go together as Papa Byrd plays guitar in a blues band. There is nothing Clayton loves more than hanging out with Papa Byrd and his band, listening to them play. He can't wait for the day when he will get to play with his grandfather. Tragedy strikes hard when Papa Byrd dies suddenly and, unfortunately Clayton, his mother has the complete opposite feelings about music, especially the blues.
Suddenly, Clayton's world is turned upside and his mother sells all of Papa Byrd's guitars and music and forbids Clayton from having music in his life. What's Clayton to do? With no grandfather to stand up for him and share his love for music, he feels lost. Desperate and unsure, Clayton runs away in search of Papa Byrd's band and the music he loves. But with his adventure lead him back to the blues or to dangers he never knew existed?
The first chapter of CLAYTON BYRD GOES UNDERGROUND by Rita Williams-Garcia comes to life as Clayton Byrd plays harmonica alongside his grandfather, Cool Papa Byrd, and the Bluesmen.

The Exact Location of Home by Kate Messner
It's hard not to love almost every Kate Messner writes, but I completely fell in love with this book. The main character, Zig, has a way of getting into your heart and you just want him to succeed. He's got a lot to juggle and his navigating his way through a hard time, so with each page turn, you hope more and more than his luck with change and he'll find his way back to his friends, family and home.
